Join us for the State of Black Shreveport’s 8th annual convention to share in developing strategies in the black community that will prepare us for the unknown in this new social order.
This year the State of Black Shreveport (SOBS) has joined forces with several organizations around the country to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the 50th anniversary of his assassination.The 8th Annual State of Black Shreveport will utilize this historic event as the backdrop of this year’s event partnering with local churches, civil organizations, and community groups to help reinvigorate the spirit of King’s vision of both social and economic equality in America.

Goals

The goal of the State of Black Shreveport will be to inform, educate, mobilize and strategize toward a common agenda that will turn the tide on current socioeconomic conditions affecting Black Shreveport and serve as a foundation for further community action.

Mobilize all segments of the African American community to address problems associated with nine (9) issue areas:

Black Media, New Media and Technology

Business Development and Opportunity

Crime and Violence

Education Access and Resources

Health

Joblessness

Politics

Spirituality, Religion, and the Church in the 21st Century

Youth Engagement and Leadership Development

Create a Plan of Action (an Agenda) designed to promote community engagement in the nine (9) issue areas.

Increase unity and organizational capacity within the African American community in Shreveport in order to bring resources and strength in numbers to bear in the nine (9) issue areas.

Promote on-going activities in order to sustain engagement of the community in the nine (9) issue areas or other issues as they arise.

Team

The State of Black Shreveport steering committee includes concerned African American leaders of all walks of life, who have come together in an effort to make fundamental improvements in the Black Community. We at the State of Black Shreveport believe “When you make Black Shreveport better, we make all of Shreveport better.” We seek to improve Black Shreveport in particular and All of Shreveport in general.
